SUPERJAZZCLUB ➔ EXCLUSIVE MIX

Ghana - based collective SuperJazzClub delivers their singular and exclusive mixtape to our community. They blend jungle, modern hip-hop or alternative music to refresh your ears and feelings.

Hey guys, how yall feeling lately ?

We are feeling good. It's been a busy year for us and we wouldn't have had it any other way.

--

First track you released was “Couple Black Kids” in 2019. Tell me how your personal experience and music have been growing in between and led you to “Back to Kids” mindset/feeling, the last single you released ?

Damn! Couple Black Kids seemed just like a few months ago but its been close to 4 years already. In between that time, we have all lived a little, met some new people along the way, collaborated with some, had bad experiences with others, traveled together and also hit some milestones along the way. Musically, I think we have learned a lot over the last few years and we are more exposed and open to trying out new things. For example, we weren’t really playing Jungle music before we joined Accra based radio platform Oroko Radio, but our involvement with the movement led us to meet so many artists in the DJ community and now we are being influenced a lot by some of these sounds from around the world we are getting to hear everyday on platforms like Oroko radio.

How did you form SuperJazzClub collective, band and what makes yall souls resonate ?

SuperJazzClub was literally formed out of the need for community. We all used to create as solo artists but after meeting each other through different mutual friends we figured it made more sense to create together and kind become a form of support for each other and that’s what we have been doing over the last few years. The one thing that keeps us connected is our basic love for creating things, whether it is making 4 minutes songs with multiple twists and turns or simply curating a playlist, we just like building stuff and that’s what we will keep doing.

--

You made a really really nice and eclectic mix. Tell me about those influences ?

Thank you! As music artists, we draw inspiration from a wide range of genres and sounds. This mix was influenced by modern hip hop and jungle, both genres we really enjoy. ALSO GARVIE!!!!!!!!!!

“we just like building stuff and that’s what we will keep doing”.

What artists have you been listening to lately and feel they are bringing some new sound ?

Rochelle Jordan, KiddBlack from Ghana, Paris Texas, Louis Culture, The Cavemen, 95ANTNY, Cleo sol.

What’s going on in the Ghanaian creative scene? Who would you like to introduce the work to us ? (music, painting, fashion, whatever the field…) ?

From leading campaigns with world renowned personalities like Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper to industry giants like pgLang and Spotify investing directly into the creative economy (see Vibrate Studio), it's clear that the Ghanaian creative scene is currently on the rise. One artist we would however like to put you on is 95ANTNY. He is a close collaborator of our collective and easily one of the most talked about new artists on the scene

What’s your definition of existing ?

Having a voice and being able to cause change in the smallest way possible.

--

What insecurities do you face as an artist ?

This is a very brilliant question. For the most part we really do not care much about a lot aside from what our real goal is and what we need to do to get there and that has proven to be a good thing for us. However, one thing that can be said is, we all didn’t get into music through the formal way. None of us has been to music school or had any formal training in music and so most of what we know is very much self-taught and as such sometimes it can be intimidating talking about music with people that have been studying the theory all their lives. All of that insecurity goes out the window the moment we hit the studio with people like that. Not to sound cocky or anything but we really do this.

--

What’s coming next for you guys ? We hope to see you soon.

We’ve got new music on the way before the end of the year which will continue our “Act” series. We’ve already released ACT 1 which has “MAD” and “Back to Kids” on there. ACT 2 will be coming before the end of the year and you should expect a different sound from before. Aside from that, we hope to be coming to a city near you next year so keep an eye out for that too. . .

A collective motto ?

Create what you feel.
