STEVE LACY, THE LO-FIS ALBUM
Y’all know Californian solo-artist and member of Alternative R&B iconic band The Internet, mister Steve Lacy. Last December, he released mild bedroom rock evocative project The Lo-Fis, a 15-tracks 25 minutes-lasting malicious and emotional album blending his first soundcloud released with brand new and rough songs.
The Lo-Fis reminds the sweet aspects of teenage fantasies. It’s the beginning of many experimentations and discovers among love, smoking pot, friendship and dating.
“Turned nineteen so we couldn’t really be thirsty” (Uuuu).
The project is a collection of L.A vibed new tracks and ones he recorded on his iphone while he was precisely experiencing adolescence as a sensitive and music-lover individual. This is a huge moment of feelings being experienced, a moment we learn from ourselves while progressively becoming ourselves. And 6 years after the release of his first demos, we cannot make any difference between the old and the new ones. Though, we do change. Something some his friends badly accept, he likes to use the verb “evolving” instead of change in “Thats No Fun”.
“I’m not gonna be the same Steve that you knew, that was Five years ago, why would I still be on the same shit, bro?”
One take a path, the friend another and no one is to blamed. Once again it’s the proceeding natural order of things. At the end, we just follow our goals and live by our own rules. And this is exactly what I like in this project : the beauty of an apparent nonchalance and its related free-will.
The Lo-Fis is a relaxing surf-pop short album leading to a sensation of lightness and casualness still dealing with strong emotions. The tracks respect no damn conventions : the tracks last between 0:53 seconds and 2:24; the covers are funny yet aesthetic collages emphasizing lofi-internet and meme culture in an innovative and spontaneous harmony released from all expectative bounds.
And as we love love, we love Steve’s project : an evident love ballad.
Between love, dating, attraction and affection, relationships are at the core of The Lo-Fis. Cause Steve talks a lot about the girls he’s passionate about : “can’t get you out of my head”, jaded about, “Nobody thinkin’ ’bout you, why’re you so self-centered ? » (Cocky Girl) but also the girls he’s definitely infatuated with “You were right in front of me, girl, I was blind to see”. His devotion is touching and reminds us how universal his vulnerability and admiration are.” Seem so unreal, like you’re mythical” (Donchano). I bet you not to identified yourself to his sentimental confessions as he mystifies the beloved one, thus allowing us to do the same in a tranquil state of mind.
Nice guitars riffs and organic drums, this a definite clear-round.
